They Knew. They Did Nothing. The Thermal Imaging Proves It.

On April 15, 2026, I walked into the Goldtex leasing office in Philadelphia and told property manager Nicole Cordial exactly what was happening to me.

"I need it. I can't breathe with the air that's come in there. I got sick. I have doctor's notes and you guys know that."

She didn't dispute it. She didn't offer a unit transfer, HVAC repair, equipment evaluation, or an industrial hygiene assessment. She gave me three options: reconnect the same portable AC unit that had been making me sick, lose cooling entirely in a unit that ran 88°F in summer, or break the lease and leave.

That meeting was on video. Nineteen days later, I was transported by ambulance to an emergency room, where I received oxygen.

This is the story of what caused it — and what the evidence shows they knew.


One Portable AC. Two Tubes. Foil Scrim Tape. 100°F Off-Gassing.

I didn't know what was making me sick. I knew I couldn't breathe. I knew the air felt wrong. I knew my symptoms tracked directly to the unit running.

What I didn't know — what nobody told me — was that the exhaust assembly on the portable AC was wrapped in Foil Scrim Kraft (FSK) tape, and that tape was cooking.

FSK tape is an industrial HVAC material with an acrylic adhesive. It has a safe operating range. The exhaust from a portable AC unit routinely exceeded it — by a lot.

At those temperatures, FSK adhesive off-gasses volatile organic compounds — specifically BTEX: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene. These are known carcinogens and organ system toxins. The contaminated exhaust didn't leave the apartment. The AC's intake pulled it back in. I was breathing a closed-loop VOC recirculation system.

The Fire Hazard That Wasn't

After I identified the portable AC unit as the source, Greystar sent me a letter. It cited a fire hazard.

There was no fire hazard. L&I never cited one. Councilmember Squilla's office confirmed nothing was on file. Nicole Cordial had asked the L&I inspector a leading question — the inspector never cited anything in response.

The fire hazard letter served one function: to make me believe the problem was the portable AC itself — not the adhesive tape burning off VOCs inside it. It worked. I unplugged it. I kept breathing the air.

By April 2026, Greystar had video-documented, first-person knowledge that the unit was causing illness. Their response was a fabricated fire hazard notice, not remediation.


Why the Mixture Was Worse Than Any Single Compound

Occupational safety limits are set for individual compounds. They assume single-substance exposure in ventilated environments with periodic breaks. They do not account for what happens when you mix them, heat them, and seal them in an apartment.

The safety thresholds assume you're only breathing one of these things. In Unit 806, I was breathing all of them — in an enclosed, recirculating loop, every day.


Multiple Chemical Sensitivity: The Harm That Doesn't Stop

Sustained VOC exposure can trigger toxicant-induced loss of tolerance (TILT). A high-dose initial exposure causes central sensitization. After that threshold is crossed, even low-level exposures to chemically unrelated substances can trigger multi-organ symptoms.

A 2025 case report documented MCS triggered by indirect VOC exposure in an enclosed space. Even routine air monitoring showing minimal concentrations did not prevent MCS onset — because brief peak exposures, not time-weighted averages, caused the sensitization. (PMC13089136)

There is no established cure for MCS. It is managed by avoidance. Some patients improve with strict chemical avoidance. Others experience persistent or progressive sensitization. The literature does not describe reliable reversal. (PMC11674335)

Even if the apartment were fully remediated today, the central sensitization already caused may be permanent. The harm doesn't end when the exposure ends.


What They Knew and When

The April 15 video establishes the anchor point. After that date, Greystar had:

May 6, 2026 — nineteen days later — I left by ambulance.
